Background and aim: Behavioral disorders in children are common and disabling disorders challenging teachers, family and the children; further, they are associated with many social problems, too. The purpose of the present research is to compare effectiveness of training communication and emotional skills on parenting stress of mothers with autism children.

Materials and Methods: This is a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test/post-test deign and control group. 45 mothers of autism children from 6-12 years old were selected through targeted sampling method and were randomly assigned into three 15-individual groups of two interventions and one control. The parents were initially evaluated in term of parenting stress; next, intervention groups received eight sessions of 90 minutes training of communication and emotional skills; whereas, the control group received no treatment. Then, the groups were tested. Data were analyzed through Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) method using SPSS-16.

Results: The results showed that there is a significant difference between intervention and control group in term of parenting stress following communication skills treatment (P<0.01). Moreover, training emotional skills also decreased parenting stress level of mothers in the intervention group comparing the control group (P<0.01). However, training emotional skills was more effective that communication skills.

Conclusion: Regarding the significance of training communication and emotional skills in decreasing stress level of mothers with children suffering from autism, it is recommended that the aforementioned training programs are used as training courses in Autistic children health centers.
