Background and Aim: Infective endocarditis is a rare condition that occurs as a result of invasive dental procedures in susceptible patients. In order to prevent this event, appropriate antibiotics must be prescribed for susceptible patients. The aim of this study was to compare the knowledge of senior dental students of Zanjan University of Medical Sciences and general dental practitioners (GDPs) on prescription of antibiotic prophylaxis against infective endocarditis in Zanjan during 2018.
Material and Method: This was a cross-sectional descriptive-analytic study which was conducted in 2018. The samples consisted of 60 GDPs from Zanjan who were selected by simple random sampling method and 30 dental students of Zanjan University of Medical Sciences who were selected through census sampling method. The research instrument was a valid and reliable researcher-made questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 3 parts: demographic variables, heart diseases, and dental procedures requiring antibiotic prophylaxis. The participants’ knowledge scores were determined by summing the total questions answered correctly. Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney, Independent t-test, and spearman’s rank correlation coefficient.
Results: The mean scores of antibiotic prescription for prevention of infective endocarditis in senior dental students of Zanjan University of Medical Sciences was higher than GDPs of Zanjan (18/55 versus 14/60, p<0/05). Knowledge had an inverse significant relationship with age and job experience among GPDs (p<0/05).
Conclusion: This study showed that GDPs’ knowledge was lower than senior dental students’. The awareness of GDPs has not been updated along with experience. This issue indicates the necessity of retraining courses for dentists about drug prescription in dentistry.
