Background and Aim: The successful and unsuccessful suicides are two major public health problems. worldwide and Preventing them is a priority in the health system of every country. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency distribution of suicide and attempted suicide and its related factors in the Divandareh city during the years 2009-2018.
Material and Method: This descriptive-analytic cross-sectional study was conducted on 585 suicides and suicide attempts during the years 2009-2018 in Divandareh city. Data were extracted from records of individuals by checklists. Data were analyzed by SPSS software version 16 using Chi-square, independent t-test and ANOVA. The statistical significance level was 0.05.
Results: 42 cases of successful suicide and 543 attempted suicide occurred during study years. Suicide fatality rate was 7.18%. The successful suicide prevalence was 63.11 per 100,000  in women and 40.26 per 100,000 in men. Most of successful suicide cases occurred during summer season (38.09%), April (16.7%), and in single individuals (50%). The most common method of suicide was hanging (76.2%) which was statistically significant (P=0.0001). The most cases of Suicide and attempted suicide were observed in age group 16-25 years (351 cases, 64.76%), which was statistically significant (P=0.002)
Conclusion: Considering the high incidence of suicide in the city, teaching life skills to the population (with emphasis on high risk groups and puberty) seems to be very necessary.
