Background and Aim: Urinary tract infection, especially by Escherichia coli, is one of the most common infections. This study aimed to determine the frequency of microbes and the pattern of susceptibility and antibiotic resistance of Escherichia coli isolated from urine samples in patients referred to 17 Shahrivar Hospital in Babol city.
Materials and Methods: 3242 samples were examined microbiologically. Detection of microbes was done by conventional microbiological methods. The antibiotic activity was determined according to the instructions of the Institute of Clinical and Laboratory Standards, 2018 and the Chi-square test and 21 Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 21 (SPSS) software were used for data analysis (P≥0.05).
Results: Out of 3242 urine samples, 692 (21.34%) had positive microbial culture. Escherichia coli with 50.57% was the most common bacteria isolated. The highest number of isolated microbes was between the ages of 50-59 and was related to Escherichia coli. There was no significant difference between age and urinary tract infection (p≤0.05). However, the frequency of infection in women (542 strains) was higher than men (150 strains) but there was no significant difference between sex and disease (P≤0.05). Based on the obtained antibiogram results, the highest antibiotic resistance of Escherichia coli was related to the SXT antibiotic.
Conclusion: Escherichia coli isolates that were separated from the samples were the most common bacterium in urinary tract infections. Resistance to various antibiotics was also observed in this bacterium. Proper screening before antibiotic administration is a significant way to prevent antibiotic resistance.
