The couples usually face to stressful situations in their life, which affect their relationship. The more stress they experience in their relationships, the more it would become unsatisfactory, and finally the risk of divorce increases. This study aimed to investigate the effect of emotionally focused couple therapy (EFCT) on decreasing marital stress. Methods: The study employed a pre-test post-test experimental design with control group. The distressed couples referring to behavior disease counseling section of health center 2 in harsin city in second half of year 1394 , comprised the study population. 16 distressed couples volunteered to participate in the study were selected and random- assigned equally to the experimental and control groups (each 8 couple). Before applying the treatment condition, the data on marital stress was gathered from both experimental and control groups using Stockholm-Tehran Marital Stress Scale (STMSS). The experimental group received ninety minutes weekly 10 sessions of EFCT. The control group received no treatment until the end of study. Post-test and follow-up measures of marital stress gathered from both groups after the completion of the treatment and one month later respectively. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to analyze the data by the help of SPSS software (version 20). Results: EFCT decreased marital stress of the couples and the results were stable through the follow-up (P<0/05). Conclusion: The result of this study indicated that Emotionally-Focused Couples Therapy could Reduce Marital Stress of Couples.
