Background and Aim: During hospitalization, children are exposed to various painful therapeutic interventions. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of aromatherapy with orange essential oil on pain in children after tonsillectomy in Amir Al-Momenin Hospital of Rasht city in 2019.
Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental research was conducted in Amir Al-Momenin Hospital of Rasht city on 64 children, who were selected using a convenience sampling method. The required data were gathered using a visual analog scale (VAS). Data were analyzed through SPSS software, version 22, using descriptive statistics and independent t-test or repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA).
Results: Mean pain intensity before intervention was 8.91 ± 0.284, and it was 7.77 ± 0.59, 6.26±0.741, 4.51±0.658, and 2.69±0.471, 30 minutes, 3 hours, 6 hours, and 12 hours later, respectively. This difference between pain intensities at different times was statistically significant. In the placebo group, the mean pain intensity before the intervention, 30 minutes, 3 hours, 6 hours, and 12 hours after was 8.91±0.284, 7.76±0.355, 6.80±0.632, 5.34±0.765, and 4.09±0.742, respectively, and the mean difference between the pain intensities was significant at different times. The total mean pain intensity showed a significant difference between the aromatherapy group and control group (P<0.001), additionally, the mean pain intensity also was different between the two groups at different times (P<0.001).
Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, aromatherapy with orange essential oil can significantly reduce the pain intensity at different times in comparison to the pain intensity before intervention. This issue must be considered in educational programs by nursing education officials and therapeutic centers.
