Background & Aim: Health literacy has an important role in promoting the health of the community. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the level of health literacy and the factors affecting it in students of Ghaen city.
Materials & Methods: This descriptive-analytical and cross-sectional study was conducted in 2019. 220 students from different universities in Ghaen city were included in the study by stratified random sampling. Data were collected using the Iranian Adult Health Literacy Questionnaire (HELIA) and were analyzed using SPSS software version 23 through descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and linear regression test.
Results: The mean (standard deviation) of health literacy score was 73.09 (14.16) out of 100. More than 25% of the participants in this study had excellent health literacy levels and 42.3% of participants had sufficient health literacy levels. The level of health literacy of 28.2% of the study population was not enough and only 3.8% of the subjects had insufficient health literacy. There was a significant relationship between age, gender and type of university with health literacy.
Conclusion: The level of health literacy of students in this study is sufficient and desirable. However, considering that about one-third of students still have an unfavorable level of health literacy, it is recommended to make appropriate decisions to improve the level of health literacy of students.
