Background and Aim: Standard precautions aimed to protect members of the treatment team from the occupational hazards which they face on a daily basis, have been recommended to members of the treatment team in recent years, but the evidence indicates that these guidelines are not fully followed. The purpose of this study is to provide a clear picture of the relevant challenges related to non-compliance with standard precautions against infectious pathogens by nurses.
Materials and Methods: The present narrative review study was conducted by searching the databases of Science Direct, Web of Sciences, SID, and PubMed using related keywords, including standard precautions, adherence, compliance, infection control, nosocomial infection, biological hazards, occupational hazards, nurses’ infectious diseases in both Persian and English papers from the beginning of 2000 to November 2020.
Results: Based on the evaluation of 15 articles in line with the objectives of the study, nurses' challenges in compliance with standard precautions against pathogens were classified into 6 groups. The above challenges are: 1-inaccessibility and lack of resources required to follow standard precautions, 2-emerging infectious diseases, 3-incompatibility of equipment required to follow standard precautions and inefficiency of nurses using the equipment 4-insufficient knowledge about standard precautions, 5-numerous roles and responsibilities and limited time, 6-formation of new risks and dangers following standard precautions.
Conclusion: Considering the factors affecting the observance of standard precautions among nurses, especially in different pandemic conditions of infectious diseases, it is necessary that policymakers, officials, and managers of the health care system, especially nursing managers, to facilitate and eliminate these known factors. In order to promote the health of the workplace and the health of the nurses' professions, provide the necessary planning to provide the appropriate resources and platform for the implementation of these standards.
