Background and Aim: Preoperative anxiety is a challenging topic in preoperative care. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of preoperative anxiety and its related factors.
Materials and Methods: In this study, 280 patients were randomly selected from those undergoing elective surgery in Imam Khomeini Hospital in Urmia. The Persian version of the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale were provided to patients in the morning before surgery. SPSS software version 16 was used for data analysis.
Results: The results indicated that 24% of patients reported a high level of preoperative anxiety, and preoperative anxiety related to surgery was more than preoperative anxiety related to anesthesia. Factors related to preoperative anxiety included; younger age (r = -0.17 and p <0.02), gender (p <0/008), not smoking (p <0.04) and not having enough sleep before surgery (p<0.04).
Conclusion: The results of the study showed that moderate to severe preoperative anxiety was present in a large number of patients. Therefore, it is recommended that surgeons meet with their patients the day before surgery.
