Background and Aim: Hemodialysis patients, in addition to experiencing various physiological changes, also face many psychological stresses, each of which in turn can disrupt their psyche and personality. This study aimed to explain the effect of music therapy on reducing anxiety and blood pressure in children undergoing dialysis.
Materials & Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest method with a control group. The study population included children undergoing dialysis at Shahid Taleghani Hospital in Gorgan in 2018. By purposive sampling, 30 children were selected and randomly divided into two groups: the music intervention therapy group (15 people) and the control group (15 people). The research questionnaire was Reynolds's overt anxiety in children. The collected data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance and SPSS software version 24 at a confidence level of 0.95.
Results: Statistical findings showed that the mean of anxiety in the experimental group before the intervention was 2.49±32.57 and after the intervention was 2.51±30.42. Also, the blood pressure in the experimental group before the intervention was 0.53±13.57 and after the intervention was 0.38±12.65 which suggested that the difference between anxiety and blood pressure was statistically significant (P<0.001).
Conclusion: According to the results of this study, it can be said that music therapy is a good approach to reduce anxiety and blood pressure in children undergoing dialysis. Music therapy reduces pain, blood pressure, and anxiety by stimulating the release of morphine-like substances or endorphins into the brain.
