Background and Aim: Marital relations quality is a multidimensional concept that includes various aspects of couples’ communications such as  compliance, satisfaction, happiness, solidarity and commitment. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy on improving the marital relationship quality and increasing the marital intimacy.
Materials and Methods: This research is a quasi-experimental study with pretest-posttest design and a control group. The study population comprised of couples with marital problems that referred to the mental health care center of Kosar in Karaj in the second half of 2014.Based on preliminary interview and entry and exit criteria for the study, 20 couples were selected through convenience sampling method and assigned to two experimental and control groups (each group of 10 couples). The marital status of Golumberg-Rust questionnaire and marital intimacy scale of Thompson and Walker were filled out by the subjects in the two groups in the pre-test and post-test phases. Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy sessions for experimental group were held 10 weekly sessions of an hour and a half. Participants in the control group did not receive intervention. Data were analysed by multivariate analysis of  covariance using SPSSV20.
Results: The results of analysis of covariance showed that Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy improved the quality of marital relationships (F = 66.98) and increased intimacy (F = 56.37) in the couples of experimental group compared with the control group (p < 0.01).
Conclusion: Results of this study showed that Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy was effective in improving the quality of marital relationships and increasing marital intimacy. It is recommended to apply this method of couple therapy in family counseling centers and workshops in order to solve the problems and marital conflicts of couples.
