Prevalence of Hepatitis C in Iranian prisoners (2001-2016): A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis. Zanko J Med Sci 2018; 19 (60) :1-13

Background and aim: Prisoners are at great risk of hepatitis C infection. The aim of this study is systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence of hepatitis C in Iranian prisoners.
Material and Method: A meta-analysis was performed on relevant articles indexed during 2001-2016 in Persian and English languages in the international scientific databases including Scupos, Science Direct, Medline (PubMed) and Google Scholar and also Iranian databases including Magiran and Scientific Information Database (SID). Bibliographies of the identified articles were reviewed for additional articles. Heterogeneity of the results of the studies was checked using I2 index. Data were analyzed using the Comprehensive Meta-analysis (CMA) software.
Results: The overall prevalence of Hepatitis C in Iranian prisoners was 18.6 % (95% Cl 12.4%-27.1%) during 2001-2016. The highest prevalence of Hepatitis C was recorded in Rasht prisoners in 2006, 45.4% (95% Cl: 40.9%-50%) and the lowest prevalence of Hepatitis C was found in Isfahan in 2012 which was7.4% (95% Cl: 4.2%-12.5%).
Conclusion: Considering the high prevalence of hepatitis C in Iranian prisons, it is recommended that health officials and policy makers pay more attention to prevention and control of Hepatitis C in prisons.
