Background and Aim: Error detecting is known as basis of patient safety improvement. Since the clinical experience of nursing students is limited, they may unintentionally be exposed to medication errors and don't report them for many different reasons. The present study aimed to determine the barriers of reporting medication errors among nursing students of Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences.
Material and Method: This descriptive-analytic study was conducted on 120 nursing students, from third to eighth semester, in Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences which had passed successfully a unite of clinical pharmacology, enrolled through census method. Data were collected by a two part questionnaire Including demographic features and the probable causes of not reporting medication errors. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 16 through descriptive statistics, Chi-square and Fisher’s exact test.
Results: In this study 55.7% of the cases were female, 89.3% were not married and just 13.1% of them reported their medication errors. In this study the most frequent reasons for not reporting errors were fear of detecting errors and creating legal issues following it (72.9%), fear of being posted in the college news and other students being informed (72.1%), fear of patients being informed and have negative attitude toward them (70.5%), and fear of the impact of the error in the evaluation score and its following educational consequences (64.7%). There was a statistically significant relationship between training Department (training place) and the fear of being posted in the college news and other students being informed (p=0.03) and there was another statistically significant relationship between gender (p=0.06) and marital status (p=0.08) and fear of being informed by employees of the department and blamed by them.
Conclusion: According to the results of this study, it is essential to develop an efficient system to document and report errors in order to decrease medication errors and nursing managers should react positively towards the reports of medication errors by nursing.
