Background and Aim: According to the relatively high prevalence of this cancer among women, employing strategies for the psychological empowerment of women is recommended. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of training to overcome the learned helplessness on promoting life expectancy and the mental health in women with breast cancer in 2017
Material and Method: This quasi-experimental study was performed as pre-test and post-test on 30 women with breast cancer admitted to the Cancer Research Center of Valiasr Clinic in Imam Khomeini Hospital which were selected by random sampling method and placed in experimental and control groups. Data were collected by Schneider's life expectancy and general health questionnaires (GHQ-28). Twelve sessions of intervention were held for one hour per week at a site located at North Amirabad and Fatemi St. intersection. After the sessions, both groups were asked to complete the questionnaire again. Multivariate covariance analysis was used to analyze the data.
Results: The results showed significant differences in the mean of physical symptoms (F = 6.906, P = 0.015), anxiety (F = 10.307, P = 0.004), social dysfunction (F = 11.678, P=0.002), major depression (F = 32.378, P = 0.000), and factor thinking (F=6/906 P=0.015) and strategic thinking (F=10.307, P = 0.004) in the experimental and control groups. Indeed, there is a significant difference in the effect of pre-test scores between the moderated mean of physical symptoms, anxiety, social dysfunction and major depression, factor thinking, and strategic thinking in terms of group in the post-test.
Conclusion: Overall, based on these results, one can state that training to overcome the learned helplessness in post-test reduced physical symptoms, anxiety, social dysfunction and major depression and increased the life expectancy aspects.
