Background and Aim: MS is one of the most common neurological causes of central nervous system dysfunction. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of acceptance-based therapy and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy on life expectancy and psychological well-being in MS patients.
Materials & Methods: The research method was quasi-experimental and pre-test-post-test with a control group. The statistical population consisted of all people with MS in Gorgan, of which 45 people admitted to the neurology ward of Hakim Jorjani and Shahid Sayad Shirazi hospitals in Gorgan were selected by convenience sampling and randomly divided into 3 groups of 15 people. Took place. The research instruments were life expectancy questionnaire (AHS) and psychological well-being questionnaire (RSPWB). The two intervention groups received therapies based on acceptance and commitment (act) and cognitive therapy based on mindfulness during 8 sessions of 1.5 hours and the control group did not receive any intervention. Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance and comparison of means.
Results: The mean score of psychological well-being of patients in the treatment group based on acceptance and commitment before training was 3.726±12.412 which reached 2.531±13.01 after training. And in the mindfulness group before training was 3.693±12.53 which after training reached 4.695±15.933. Also, the life expectancy score in the treatment group based on acceptance and commitment before training was 5,625±26.115, which reached 4.417±29.106 after training. And in the mindfulness group before training was 6.672±26.65 which after training reached 5.327±311.431. This difference was statistically significant (P-value=0.000).
Discussion and Conclusion: According to the research findings to increase psychological well-being and life expectancy in patients with M.S Acceptance and commitment-based therapy techniques and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy are recommended.
